At Gawsworth Primary School, we believe that the ability to swim confidently is a core life skill that every child should attain by the end of Key Stage 2. Swimming is a life-skill that can promote social interaction, enjoyment of a life-long physical activity which promotes a healthy lifestyle and physical well-being and the ability to save one’s own life and the lives of others. We aim for all of our children to be able to swim confidently by the end of Year 6. Staff and governors have high aspirations for all our our children in swimming.
Children at Gawsworth Primary School are provided with swimming lessons at Macclesfield Leisure Centre by trained swimming teachers employed by Life Leisure and trained members of school staff. Children swim on a weekly basis from Years 4-6 for a term each, with Year 6 swimming in the Autumn term, Year 5 in the Spring term and Year 4 in the Summer term.
Children at Gawsworth achieve highly in swimming. Children in Year 5/6 achieve well in the annual Macclesfield and District Swimming gala held in March and many children make a wider contribution to the local community in swimming by taking part in the annual Macclesfield Rotary Club sponsored swimathon.
In 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 all children have met the National Curriculum expectations for swimming by the end of Year 6. At Gawsworth Primary School, the overwhelming majority of children reach the required National Curriculum standards by the end of Year 4 and 5 with children swimming a range of strokes competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance in excess of 25 metres and all children practise safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
