At Gawsworth Primary School, we have adopted an exciting, thematic approach to teaching. There is evidence that teaching subject knowledge and skills as part of a wider topic-based curriculum allows pupils to make useful links between areas of learning and consolidate skills. This serves the children well for future life, where subject specific skills are very rarely used in isolation whether it is in our daily lives or in the workplace. We believe that children are also likely to be more engaged in their learning if it has a context and theme that runs through it and that our children learn better when they can make connections between what they are learning. Although our teaching is around a theme, we teach specific skills and knowledge in each subject area and explain to the children which subject discipline they are learning. The grid below provides an overview of our topic matrix through the school.
British Values are threaded throughout our curriculum. We examine these in conjunction with The Commonwealth Charter and our own school values of Aspiration, Equality, Innovation, Pride and Respect.
