Welcome to Year 5  Autumn Term 2021

Our Topic is ‘The Victorians’

Welcome back every one. What an exciting year we have ahead of us in Y5.

We have a lot to look forward to this term with our topic on ‘The Victorians’.

This history theme will also be linked to our English work with a focus on ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens (fiction) and persasive writing in the form of letters about the Children and Factory Acts (child labour) of the period.

Oliver Twist asks for “more”.

In our Craft Design Technology (CDT) we will be looking at the amazing inventions and innovations from the ‘Industrial Revolution’ and how this changed transport and communications as well leading to mass production on farms, in factories, mills and mines. In particular we will be exploring ‘Bridges’, their types, structures and the major influence of Isambard Kingdom Brunel on new designs like suspension bridges.

Issues surrounding the use of child labour in the mills, factories and mines (a form of slavery) will be explored . The introduction of the Factory Acts and Education acts leading to recognition of and greater protection of children's rights.

In Geography we will discover what countries made up the British Empire and how this links to the Commonwealth today. Locally we will explore maps and photos from the Victorian period of Gawsworth to see what is still there and what has changed. Ideally we would love to visit Quarry Bank Mill but are aware that this may not be possible with current Covid-19 restrictions. In Art we will be looking at the designs of William Morris, based on plants and nature, and how designs were turned into prints. Watercolour, observational drawing and block printing will be done to design a gift bag.

In science this term the focus is on Solids, Liquids and Gases and their properties (see jigsaw for details)

Home Learning

Homework will not be starting until the end of this month as we feel the children need time to settle and we need to get to know the children to decide what is most appropriate for them for home learning. Details will follow.

Games (outdoors) is on Mondays this half term. Please make sure children come in correct kit which should be: black shorts, Gawsworth Tshirt, trainers, Gawsworth sweatshirt (or a sweatshirt that is plain green, black or navy). Once the weather gets colder they will need black joggers.

Indoor PE/Drama will be on Friday mornings and for this they need Gawsworth shorts, Tshirts and bare feet (ideally) or black pumps.

A ‘Curriculum Jigsaw' is attached to this page.  A weekly timetable will be issue next week after things have been finalised.

Best wishes,

Mrs Sarah Waring and Mrs Christine Nicholls
