Welcome to Year 5 Summer 2022
Welcome to the Summer Term!
I hope many of you got the chance to view your children's books at the "Book Look" on 31st March and I'm sure, like us you would have been proud of both the quality and volume of your child's work. They have worked so hard this year!
We are spending the next 2 weeks completing our Geography topic on Japan (part of the ‘Extreme Earth' topic). After this we will be starting our new topic on 'Slavery'
We have left this topic to the summer term as we feel that the children will be mature enough to engage in the very serious themes of: slavery (modern and past), child labour, racism and discrimination, civil rights and the Black Lives Matter movement.
In History we will look at the system of Transatlantic slavery (capture, Middle Passage, plantation), the treatment of slaves and the Abolition Movement that sought to end Slavery, to American Civil War, American Civil Rights Movement (Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King) to present day. Our English focus will be on Biography (Henry Box Brown, Rosa Parks) and narrative writing and drama based on 'The Capture', Slave Auctions and Diary recounts.
In Art we will explore West African culture and look at pattern, symbols and mask making.
In Science we will be continuing our work on Forces looking particularly at Friction and Levers. After this we will look at 'Materials and their Properties' including reverible and irreversible changes. In Addition we will be focusing on keeping ourselves safe (Drugs Education) and Sex and Relationships. This is covered in both PSHE and Science.
Homework will consist of a continuation of their Century Learning Pathway and this will include some Science and English nuggets. |In addition weekly tasks set on MyMaths will continue. This will be set on Fridays to be completed the following Friday. Please look at the task well in advance of the due date and if your child has any issues with it report it to Mrs Waring by Wednesday. This allows us time to look at the task with your child and they then have two further nights with which to complete it.
There will be a PE session on Tuesday mornings - be dressed for outdoor games.
There will be another outdoor PE session on Friday afternoons.
Attached is a ‘Curriculum Jigsaw' for this term and a weekly timetable. for this half of term.
