Year 2 2021 - 2022
Year 2 Teacher
Welcome to Year Two Autumn Term 2021.
I hope you have had a relaxing summer and are all ready for an exciting journey in Year 2.
I am Mrs Julie Platt, the Year 2 class teacher. Mrs Helen Brough will be the Year 2 class teacher on a Friday.
After an unimaginable 18 months, it is lovely to know that hopefully, we will be back to some normality for this coming year.
Our topic this term is ‘Commotion in the Ocean'.
Our exciting topic this term is ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and our first mission this term is to become a team of daring ocean explorers who are always ready to dive into action! We will be learning about the United Kingdom and then travelling the seas and exploring new islands and underwater worlds. We will be learning about our history with the sea – focusing on The Titanic and Grace Darling. We will become Marine Biologists and learn all about the amazing sea creatures who live in our oceans and how we can help protect them. We will also go on amazing adventures with pirates and mermaids and perhaps find some lost treasure!
The children will use 'Talk4Writing’ as the basis for our narrative writing this term. We will be using the text ‘The Snail and the Whale’ to begin our writing journey. We will begin to practice cursive handwriting in preparation for writing in joined-up handwriting by the end of Year 2. We will begin the year using RWI Phonics and we will also be developing new skills in grammar.
As mathematicians, we will be learning all about numbers to 100 through place value, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, money, time, measures, 2d shape and data. We will practice learning number bonds to 10 and 20 and learn these by rote.
Each Friday the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Maths, RE, Music and French.
We have lots of super books that we will be sharing as a class. Here are a few of them:
We have such a busy term planned. I hope you are excited about your return to school!
Ways to help at home:
Reading Books (2 Scheme Books and 1 RWI bookbag book)
Books are changed once a week and your child's book change day is written in their diary. 2 books will be issued for the week from the school reading scheme. Please discuss the books with your children to help them to develop a greater understanding of the book. Challenge them to see if they understand the meaning of words they are reading. You will be surprised at how many children can read difficult words but have no idea what the word means. Please make sure that your child has their reading books in school every day as your child will also be reading individually in school to a member of staff or a parent helper.
The book change days will be as follows:
- Tigers: Monday
- Lions: Tuesday
- Snow Leopards: Wednesday
- Jaguars: Thursday
Home Learning tasks are given out on a Thursday and need to be returned (named) by the following Wednesday in their Home Learning Folder. The homework will either be literacy, numeracy or topic-based. Home Learning may also be computer-based using Reading Eggs/Express, Doodle or My Maths.
Each week the children will have either spellings or mental maths to learn at home and the children will be tested on the learned spellings or maths on a Thursday.
Our PE slots this term will be on a Monday and a Wednesday. The children will continue to come into school on those days wearing their PE kit.
- Indoor /outdoor kit: black shorts, a Gawsworth t-shirt, black joggers/leggings, a Gawsworth hoodie and trainers.
We also do running and other physical activities each day in school. Your child will need outdoor trainers every day in school.
All of the children will need a filled water bottle every day. Thank you.
We can't wait to get started......
