Welcome to Year Two    Autumn Term 2019  

Welcome to our Autumn Term in Year 2.  

I hope you have had an amazing summer and are all ready for an exciting journey in Year 2!

I am Mrs Julie Platt, the Year 2 class teacher.  We are delighted to announce that Ms Deborah Ashton will be supporting Year 2 as our Classroom Assistant (TA) from September 2019.  Many of you will know Ms Ashton from KS2.

We will begin the term by focussing on our exciting topic ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’.  We will be finding out all about animals in the UK and in Africa. I am looking forward to finding out about the children’s pets and favourite animals. In Science we will be finding out all about their needs and how to care for them.  We are planning visits from a vet, guide dogs and the RSPCA.  We will be looking at animal prints, camouflage and markings in art and also looking at the artist Henry Rousseau – ‘Monkeys in the Orange Grove’.

The children will use 'Talk4Writing’ as the basis for our narrative writing this term.  We will be using the text ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ to begin our writing journey.  There is a rather large tiger in the Year 2 class room.  I hope it is friendly!! We will begin to practice cursive handwriting in preparation for writing in joined up handwriting by the end on Year 2.  The children will be introduced to two new literacy aides - 'Project X' and 'RWI Spellings'.  Project X will help to develop the children's reading and comprehension skills.  The children will also be zooming off to 'Planet Spelling' through RWI and will be meeting the characters Gamma, Zeta and Mu.  Alongside this we will also be developing new skills in grammar.  We have a tent in the reading area in the classroom for the children to use – however it is surrounded by animals.  I hope it is safe.

As mathematicians we will be learning all about numbers and mathematical concepts through place value, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, money, time, measures, 2d and 3d shape and data and statistics.  We will practice learning number bonds to 10 and 20 and learn these by rote.  We will also learn our 2x, 5x and 10x timestables off by heart.

Each Monday afternoon, the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Music and French.

We have such a busy term planned.  I hope you are excited about your new challenges!

Ways to help at home:

The children are welcome to bring in any books or relevant objects to share with the class (please name them) connected with our topic.  The children could also use the internet, with your support, and visit the local library to find any interesting facts.

Reading Books (3 Scheme Books and 1 Choosing Book)

Books are changed once a week and your child's book change day is written in their diary.  3 books will be issued for the week from the schools reading scheme.  Please discuss the books with your children to help them to develop a greater understanding of the book.  Challenge them to see if they understand the meaning of words they are reading.  You will be surprised at how many children can read difficult words but have no idea what the word means.  The children are also given the opportunity to choose a book of their own choice – in response to the reading questionnaires that were given to both parents and pupils we have recognised that the children would like more choice with their reading books.  Whilst the scheme books have a job to do in teaching the children the skills to become competent readers the idea of the choosing book is that it is one your child is interested in and it is a book is to be shared and enjoyed with an adult.  THE CHILDREN ARE NOT EXPECTED TO READ THE BOOK INDEPENDENTLY TO YOU AS WITH THE READING SCHEME BOOK.  Please make sure that your child has their reading books in school everyday as your child will also be reading individually in school to a member of staff or a parent helper.

The children are in new Kagan Groups.

The book change days will be as follows:

  • Blue and Green: Monday

  • Gold and White: Tuesday

  • Red and Yellow: Wednesday

  • Orange and Silver: Thursday


Homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be returned (named) by the following Thursday in their Homework Folder.  The homework will either be literacy, numeracy or topic based.  

Each week the children will have either spellings or mental maths to learn at home and the children will be tested on the learned spellings or maths on a Thursday. 


Our PE slots this term will be on Thursday afternoon and a Friday morning.

- Indoor /outdoor kit (shorts and t’shirt) with pumps or trainers will be needed.  

- Outdoor kit (joggers and jumper) with trainers will  be needed.

We also do running and other physical activities each day in school.  Your child will need outdoor trainers everyday in school.
