 Summer Term 2021

Welcome to our Summer Term in Year 2.

I hope you have all had a lovely relaxing Easter and are ready for our exciting term ahead.

We will begin the term by focusing on our exciting topic ‘Healthy Me’.  We will be finding out about the Olympics and Tokyo.  I wonder if anyone has ever been to Tokyo? We will be finding out about a nurse who was called Florence Nightingale and discovering all about healthy food.

Our science work is focusing on 'Animals and Humans, and finding out how we keep healthy and strong.  We aim to grow some healthy food that we can eat.

Our literacy work will begin with the children using the story ‘The magic porridge pot’ for their writing. We will be writing instructions, letters and facts also. We will continue with practising our joined-up handwriting.  We will focus our phonics on ‘RWI Phonics’ and we will be learning spelling rules with 'RWI Spelling’.  RWI books and Project X books will help to develop the children's reading and comprehension skills. Alongside this, we will also be developing new skills in grammar.

As mathematicians, we will be learning all about numbers to 100 and above through place value, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division fractions, money, time, measures, 2d shape and data.  We will practise learning our tables and we will learn these off by heart.

We have lots of super books that we will be sharing as a class.  Here are a few of them:

The Tiger Who Came to Tea Pop-Up Book, Tiger Pop Up

Our class book is going to be The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

Each Friday the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Maths, RE, Music and French.

We have such a busy term planned.  I hope you are excited about your new challenges.

Ways to help at home:

Reading Books

Reading books will be issued once a week.  Your child will have books to support your child's phonic knowledge, decoding words, understanding comprehension and developing a lifelong love of reading.

Homework

In light of the Covid pandemic, homework will continue to be issued online through My Maths, Doodle or Reading Eggs.

Handa's Surprise

PE

Our PE slots this term will be on a Monday afternoon and a Wednesday afternoon.

In an effort to minimise risk, as a school, we have decided that children must arrive in school wearing their PE kits on their PE days.

- Indoor /outdoor kit (shorts and t’shirt) with pumps or trainers will be needed.

- Outdoor kit (joggers and jumper) with trainers will be needed.

We also do running and other physical activities each day in school.  Your child will need outdoor trainers every day in school.  The trainers need to be left in school so on PE days your child will have to come to school wearing their school shoes and then change (unless they have two pairs of trainers).  Thank you in advance for your co-operation in these unusual times.

We can't wait to get started......
