Mrs Platt

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year Two   Autumn Term 2020.

Welcome Back

I hope you have had a relaxing Summer and are all ready for an exciting journey in Year 2.

I am Mrs Julie Platt, the Year 2 class teacher.  Mrs Helen Brough will be the Year 2 class teacher on a Friday.  We are so lucky to have three wonderful TA’s who will be supporting the Year 2 class - Ms Deborah Ashton, Mrs Deborah Meehan and Mrs Anne Farmer.

It was wonderful to see the children at the end of the Summer term in Year 1 and it was amazing to see how quickly they had settled back into school after the school was closed because of the pandemic.

We will begin by re-establishing routines and school rules such as regular hand washing, where we enter and leave rooms and school and our one way system around school.  (I am sure that the children will easily remember).  We will also have the playground all to ourselves at break times – so lots of space to run about.

The whole school is going to begin the term by focussing on a book called ‘Here We Are’ by Oliver Jeffers.  The book will help the children to understand the world we live in today and this will allow the children to express themselves through music, poetry, drama, art and play.  Our main aim is for your child to feel happy, safe and loved.

Our topic this term is ‘Commotion in the Ocean'.

Once we have all settled back into school our first mission this term is to become a team of daring ocean explorers who are always ready to dive into action! We will be learning about the United Kingdom and then travelling the seas and exploring new islands and underwater worlds.  We will be learning about our history with the sea – focusing on The Titanic and Grace Darling.  We will become Marine Biologists and learn all about the amazing sea creatures who live in our oceans and how we can help protect them. We will also go on  amazing adventures with pirates and mermaids and perhaps find some lost treasure!

The children will use 'Talk4Writing’ as the basis for our narrative writing this term.  We will be using the text ‘The Snail and the Whale’ to begin our writing journey.  We will begin to practice cursive handwriting in preparation for writing in joined up handwriting by the end on Year 2.  The children will be introduced to two new literacy aides - 'Project X' and 'RWI Spellings'.  Project X will help to develop the children's reading and comprehension skills.  The children will also be zooming off to 'Planet Spelling' through RWI and will be meeting the characters Gamma, Zeta and Mu.  Alongside this we will also be developing new skills in grammar.

As mathematicians we will be learning all about numbers to 100 through place value, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, money, time, measures, 2d shape and data.  We will practice learning number bonds to 10 and 20 and learn these by rote.

Each Friday the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Maths, RE, Music and French.

We have lots of super books that we will be sharing as a class.  Here are a few of them:

We have such a busy term planned.  I hope you are excited about your return to school!

Ways to help at home:

Reading Books

In light of the Covid pandemic we will issue books asap and let you know the rules around changing and re-issuing.

Homework

In light of the Covid pandemic homework will initially be issued online through My Maths, Doodle or Reading Eggs.

PE

Our PE slots this term will be on a Monday afternoon and a Wednesday morning.

In an effort to minimise risk, as a school we have decided that children must arrive in school wearing their PE kits on their PE days.

- Indoor /outdoor kit (shorts and t’shirt) with pumps or trainers will be needed.

- Outdoor kit (joggers and jumper) with trainers will be needed.

We also do running and other physical activities each day in school.  Your child will need outdoor trainers everyday in school.  The trainers need to be left in school so on PE days your child will have to come to school wearing their school shoes and then change (unless they have two pairs of trainers).  Thank you in advance for your co-operation in these unusual times.

We can't wait to get started......

Mrs J Platt, Mrs H Brough and the Year 2 team.
