Year 2 2021 - 2022
Year 2 Teacher
Welcome to Year Two Summer Term 2022
I hope you have all had a lovely relaxing Easter and are ready for our exciting term ahead .
We will begin the term by focussing on our exciting topic ‘Healthy Me’. We will be finding out about the Commonwealth Games that are taking place in Birmingham, the UK in July. I wonder if anyone can name the countries that are in the Commonwealth? We will be finding out about a nurse who was called Florence Nightingale and discovering all about healthy food.
Our science work is focussing on ‘Plants’, and looking at seeds, bulbs and beans. In the 2nd term, we will be looking at 'Animals and Humans and finding out how we keep healthy and strong. We aim to grow some healthy food that we can eat.
Our literacy work will begin with the children using the story ‘The papaya who spoke’ for their writing. We will be writing instructions, letters and facts also. We will continue practicing our joined-up handwriting. We will be learning spelling rules with 'RWI Spelling’. Alongside this, we will also be developing and applying skills in grammar.
As mathematicians, we will be using numbers to 100 and above through place value, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division fractions and money. We will also be covering time, measures, 2d shape and data. We will practice learning our tables and we will learn these off by heart.
We have lots of super books that we will be sharing. Here are a few of them.
Each Friday the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Maths, RE, Music and French.
We have such a busy term planned. We can't wait to get started!
WAYS TO HELP AT HOME
- 2 Scheme Books and 1 RWI bookbag book if your child is doing RWI phonics.
- 3 Scheme Books if your child has completed RWI phonics.
Books are changed once a week and your child's book change day is written in their diary. 2 or 3 books will be issued for the week from the school reading scheme. Please discuss the books with your children to help them to develop a greater understanding of the book. Challenge them to see if they understand the meaning of words they are reading. You will be surprised at how many children can read difficult words but have no idea what the word means. Please make sure that your child has their reading books in school every day as your child will also be reading individually in school to a member of staff or a parent helper.
The book change days will be as follows:
- Tigers: Monday
- Lions: Tuesday
- Snow Leopards: Wednesday
- Jaguars: Thursday
Home Learning tasks are given out on a Thursday and need to be completed by the following Wednesday. The homework will either be literacy, numeracy or topic-based. Home Learning may also be computer-based using Reading Eggs/Express, Doodle or My Maths.
Each week the children will have either spellings or mental maths to learn at home and the children will be tested on the learned spellings or maths on a Thursday.
Our PE slot this term will be on a Monday and a Thursday.
The children will continue to come into school on those days wearing their PE kit.
- Indoor /outdoor kit: black shorts, a Gawsworth t-shirt, black joggers/leggings, a Gawsworth hoodie and trainers.
We also do running and other physical activities each day in school. Your child will need outdoor trainers every day in school.
All of the children will need a filled water bottle every day. Thank you.
We can't wait to get started......
