Welcome to an exciting Spring Term in Year 2.   The children worked so hard in the Autumn term and finished with an amazing performance of 'I’m Gonna Shine’, and shine they most certainly did. I was so proud of them all.

Our topic this term is ‘Enchanted Wood'.

We will be finding out about animals, enchanted creatures, magical faries and woodland folk during the term.  We will have a local visit to Gawsworth Hall where we will be discovering all the secrets of Gawsworth Hall and it’s gardens.  Finding out all about Maggoty Johnson will also be on the agenda!  In science we will be planting seeds.  I wonder if any will grow into beanstalks?  In art we will be looking at the artist ‘Monet’ and his painting ‘Water lily pond’.  I hope we have some good weather for bark rubbings and observational drawings of plants and trees.

Our Talk for Writing work is going to begin with non-chronological writing about foxes.  ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’ will also be our focus in our writing.  The children will use ‘Dragons Post’ in their narrative writing.  The children will be writing letters, instructions and poems.  We will also have lots of super books to read such as 'The Secret Garden, Enchanted Wood, The Gruffalo and Traditional Tales like Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood.

As mathematician we will be continuing our learning all about numbers to 100 through place value, tens and ones, addition and subtraction.  We will also cover multiplication, division fractions, money, time, measures, 2d shape and data.  We will practice learning our times tables 2x,10x and 5x so that we know them off by heart!

Every Friday the children will have Mrs Helen Brough for Maths, RE and PSHE in the mornings and for Music and French in the afternoon.  Mrs Farmer will be supporting the children on a Friday morning as the classroom assistant.

Lastly, at the end of March we have our overnight trip to Tattenhall to look forward to.  It will be such fun – I can’t wait!

We have such a busy term planned.  I hope you are excited about your new challenges!

Can all children have a filled water bottle every day. Thank you.

Ways to help at home:

The children are welcome to bring in any books or relevant objects to share with the class (please name them) connected with our topic.  The children could also use the internet, with your support, and visit the local library to find any interesting facts.

Reading Books (3 Scheme Books and 1 Choosing Book)

Books are changed once a week and your child's book change day is written in their diary.  3 books will be issued for the week from the schools reading scheme.  Please discuss the books with your children to help them to develop a greater understanding of the book.  Challenge them to see if they understand the meaning of words they are reading.  You will be surprised at how many children can read difficult words but have no idea what the word means.  The children are also given the opportunity to choose a book of their own choice – in response to the reading questionnaires that were given to both parents and pupils we have recognised that the children would like more choice with their reading books.  Whilst the scheme books have a job to do in teaching the children the skills to become competent readers the idea of the choosing book is that it is one your child is interested in and it is a book is to be shared and enjoyed with an adult.  THE CHILDREN ARE NOT EXPECTED TO READ THE BOOK INDEPENDENTLY TO YOU AS WITH THE READING SCHEME BOOK.  Please make sure that your child has their reading books in school everyday as your child will also be reading individually in school to a member of staff or a parent helper.

The children are in new Kagan Groups.

The book change days will be as follows:

  • Blue and Green: Monday

  • Gold and White: Tuesday

  • Red and Yellow: Wednesday

  • Orange and Silver: Thursday

Homework

Homework is given out on a Thursday and needs to be returned (named) by the following Wednesday in their Homework Folder.  The homework will either be literacy, numeracy or topic based.

Each week the children will have either spellings or mental maths to learn at home and the children will be tested on the learned spellings or maths on a Thursday.

PE

Our PE slots this term will be on Tuesday afternoon and a Wednesday morning.

- Indoor /outdoor kit (shorts and t’shirt) with pumps or trainers will be needed.

- Outdoor kit (joggers and jumper) with trainers will  be needed.

We also do running and other physical activities each day in school.  Your child will need outdoor trainers everyday in school.

I can't wait to get started......
